He was born in Malatya in 1963. After graduating from Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, he completed his specialty education in the Department of Internal Medicine of the same faculty and became an "Internal Medicine" specialist in 1991. At the same date, he started to work as a specialist in the Department of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty.

Between 1 February and 15 October 1995, he worked as a "Research Fellow" in the Department of Infectious Diseases, New Orleans, Tulane University, on the subjects of "viral cell culture techniques, HIV-HTLV isolation and cultures, infections in immunosuppressive patients, nosocomial infections". .

He became associate professor in 1996 and professor in 2002. Between 1995 and 1996, he worked as the secretary of the "Istanbul Association for Combating Contagious Diseases" for 2 years. Since November 1, 2002, he has been a member of the board of directors of the Association for Fight Against Viral Hepatitis, and since 2011, he has been the president of this association. He is also the founding president of the "HIV Infection Association" established on 10 December 2013.

He has nearly 100 articles published in national journals, more than 150 articles published in international journals, and a book titled "Infectious Diseases", first published in 1999, second edition in 2003 and third edition in 2009. He is also the editor of 10 books on infectious diseases and viral hepatitis. Areas of interest are viral hepatitis, HIV and other infections in immunocompromised patients.

He is still working as a faculty member and head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty.
