He graduated from Istanbul American Robert High School and Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. He completed his urology residency training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Urology Department in 1991. In 1994-1995, he completed his higher specialty studies in the field of pediatric urology at Washington University in the USA. He became associate professor in 1995 and professor in 2002.
Serdar Tekgül is married and has a child.
He was a board member of the Turkish Pediatric Urology Association between 1996-2006. He was the President of this Association between 2008-2011.
In 2003, he was elected as a Board Member of the European Association of Pediatric Urology (ESPU). In 2003 and 2008, he was the President of the European Pediatric Urology Education Commission.
He worked as the scientific secretary of the European Association of Pediatric Urology (ESPU) between 2008-2010.
He served as the General Secretary of the European Association of Pediatric Urology in 2010-2016.
He became a founding member and founding board member of the Urological Surgery Association in 2010, and served as the president of the Urological Surgery Association in 2011-2013.
Since 2004, he was elected to the World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Board on World Incontinence (urinary incontinence), and in 2008 he became the chairman of the committee on children in this board. He wrote the chapter on child urinary incontinence in the book (ICI 2009 report) written by this board in 2009. He is currently preparing the 2017 report as a member of this board.
